You must be kidding! Wlach's intonation was, by modern standards, I am
afraid at times quite far from satisfying, but the soul behind his playing!
His sound was so deep you could drown in it. He was no doubt the most
soulful clarinettist I have ever heard (incl. Naftule Brandwayn and Barney
Bigard). He is in fact the ONLY clarinettist who's recording of
Maerchenerzaehlungen I can listen to. It's so profound, so sincere and so
close to the spirit of the music in a true, historic sense of "Romantic"
feeling, not sentimental but bursting with restrained passion. It never
fails to drive tears in my eyes! Maybe you'd have to listen to it not in CA
but in misty auld rotten Austria/Germany with its contradictions, terrors,
beauties and morbid eccentrics . . .
