Subj: [kl] "Grenadilla Gorilla Jumps" in Essential Elements

Our school district recently switched our band method books to
"Essential Elements", which now comes with a DVD with special
instructions of putting the clarinet together, care of the clarinet,
embochure and various useful instruction. It also has delightful
accompaniments for students to "play along" with, first with the
accompaniment of a professional clarinetist, then alone with the
accompaniment. All of the arrangements sound great and the students love
to practice. Since our band program starts in the 4th grade, the new
books are very helpful to the young students.
I was very happily surprized with the "Grenadilla Gorilla Jumps" for
going over the break. They are very similar to the long tones I learned
as a young students where you play a low note in the chalumeau register,
say low A, then you press the register key and make a smooth connection
to E. The accompaniment sounds like some sort of Safari music, but it
really cool for the kids. I went to the Goodwill and purchased 6 stuffed
animal monkeys as "prizes" for all the youngsters who are working on
their "Gorilla Jumps". The lady at the check out counter only charged me
$.25 cents for each monkey when she found out they were "Educational".
