David,

I also purchased the ATG reed system at ClarinetFest and I have had
very a very good experience with it. My background is a bit different
as I am more of a serious community player, and have limited time for
practice and reed work.

I do study with a local university professor and he was much more
skeptical of the system, and to his credit gave reasons and a test to
see if his reasoning was correct. With the ATG system, one immediately
adjusts a reed. My professor's view was this is like performing
surgery on an infant. One should only do this when needed, not on a
regular basis. His concern was that all the adjusting would affect the
longevity of the reed.

To test this, I now, for every reed I start, I date the reed and mark
if I use the ATG system on it (approximately half of them). Over time,
I will be able to tell if the ATG reeds wear out faster than the
unaltered reeds. I do not have results yet, as I have been playing
more bass and the reeds last so much longer that only a few have
actually worn out.

Overall, I am very pleased with the product and associated
documentation.

Tom Smith
