Wasn't Wagner, among other things, something of a proto-feminist? I
recall hearing the Nazis had to turn upside-down his attitudes to women
to make his work fit with their macho agenda.
I have to confess I know little about him and little of his music,
although what I have heard struck me as remarkable---above all his
amazing sense of orchestral colour.
I remember a (very left-wing) German friend raving to me about the sheer
explicit sexuality of the music of Tristan and Isolde---apparently
including a very vivid musical description of Coitus Interruptus :-D
