I have a faint glimmer of what you're saying. Namely, an electronic
device which reads a file and outputs sound is a "computer" of sorts,
but it is not a PC which must also be prepared to handle non-musical
tasks such as Internet and word processing.

My town has an electronic music store. I'll take your advice and visit
the store.

I'm certainly less than fully satisfied with what I have now. My old
computer died, and I had no choice but to buy a new one; but it (and its
software) place one obstacle after another in my path where music is
concerned. I am not pursuing electronic music for its own sake, but
there are times when I want to hear something that I can't play myself.
