Subj: [kl] .... more about Finale vs. Sibelius [was: drum roll]

Playing a clarinet is more enjoyable than playing a computer file, but
since some of us also want (or need) to listen to the output of music
notation programs....

When Sibelius does a 'playback' with their Kontakt module (not with
midi), the result _SOMETIMES_ approaches what you expect to hear on a CD
recorded by a major philharmonic orchestra. This is not astonishing
because sound samples come from recordings.

The problem is that this happens only 'sometimes'.

( In the case of a drum roll, I just now discovered a combination of
1/16 notes and ties and tremolos which comes fairly close to an acoustic
multi-measure drum roll. Slashing and tying notes longer than
1/8-notes goes haywire. )

So here's my question to anyone who uses Finale:

Can anyone say that Finale can play a score in a manner that approaches
a CD recording by a 'real' orchestra --- albeit perhaps only on a
"sometimes" basis?

It amuses me that, while Sibelius is loading, it plays a 9-second
excerpt from Sibelius's Symphony No. 5. It sounds good. However,
when I read the manual and then look at the disk file, Sibelius
accomplishes this by playing a recorded performance of the Lahti
Symphony Orchestra, not by notating the phrase within their own program
and then playing back the score.

Since they acknowledge this, they aren't guilty of false advertising;
but I find it misleading.

Oh well, back to playing on a real clarinet.....
