While working with both Photoscore and a Kurzweil program, I've noticed
that having a 16-shade grayscale and also controllable brightness make a
difference. Some inexpensive scanners are limited to 8 shades of gray
and no brightness adjustment.
Epson Perfection 2480 Photo (about $90 at CompUSA a while ago) has both
of the above. Kurzweil's recommendation is the 2480 --- but this may
be a paid endorsement, I don't know?
