Subject: [kl] Another branch from the Rubank thread...

The discussion has gotten on how you need supplemental material when
teaching from the Rubank books - what occurred to me was that usually
the student (assuming they're a child) is also active in a
school/youth band or orchestra. This, of course, provides a built-in
source of material (indeed, the parent in this case has often decided
on getting a private instructor after the child has gotten themselves
in WAY over their head, but that's another topic).

So my question is - what kind of success have some of you had with
students who AREN'T in one of these types of programs, for one reason
or another? Adult beginners are almost always in this position - what
approaches have worked? I'm not actively teaching lessons right now;
thinking about getting back into it, and I live in an area where:

To combat the boredom part of it, I find that it work's very well to find
books of tunes at the approximate level of the student or just a little bit
harder so that they have a reason to master the material in their lessons.
My older daughter worked very hard to master crossing the break so she could
play the waltz from Disney's Cinderella!
