I was lucky enough in high school to have at my school a state funded
artist in residence professional jazz saxophone player. I'll never forget
(I was probably about 14) going up to him and saying:

Me: "I want to learn jazz clarinet."

Him: "There's no such thing as jazz clarinet."

Me: "Huh?"

Him: "There's only jazz music."

My memory of the exact interchange is a little fuzzy (thus making the story
a bit apocryphal), but so it goes.

I wonder if I would be yelled at if I had replaced the "jazz clarinet"
above with "jazz sousaphone". Probably, but I don't think it would change
the content of my message one bit. All the people some of the time and all
that jazz. Oh well.
