I received a message from Stephen Fox that said:

"Just read a posting you made to the Klarinet list about the basset
clarinet. (I'm not a subscriber, but friends sometimes forward postings
that might be of interest.) If you've decided to go with the Buffet,
that's probably for the best, in view of your links to that company. It
would have been nice if you had told me directly, though, so that I would
know what to tell other customers regarding the work schedule next fall and
the availability of the Buffet donor. (Note that dealing with a custom
instrument maker is not quite the same as dealing with a retail store.)

Just to correct something in your posting: as I said in my last email to
you, the conversion job (which would be fully as good as a complete new
instrument) could have been fitted in sometime next fall, which is a wait
of six months, not a year.

Anyway, best of luck with the Buffet.

Steve Fox"

I am posting this email and an explanation.

I originally contacted Stephen Fox hoping to hear back about his work. He
responded as he had time - and did so with great detail - which I very much
appreciate. I eventually came to the conclusion that I would need to wait
a year for the custom instrument (decided against the
conversion). Somehow, in our correspondence, Mr. Fox came to the
conclusion that there ws a very strong possibility that I would be ordering
from him. When I announced to the list that I was purchasing a Buffet
Basset Clarinet, I received the above email.

My apologies to Mr. Fox. I realize now that our correspondence may have
led him to believe I was planning to order from him when, in fact, I was
simply trying to accumulate information so that I could make a decision
about what to purchase. From what I can tell, Mr. Fox makes
extraordinarily fine instruments. However, I needed one sooner than mid
2006, and that is the date he told me he could have either a custom
clarinet or an extension ready.

I hope this explains our correspondence and puts Mr. Fox at ease regarding
the reasons for going with a Buffet. If I had had more time, I would have
strongly considered ordering a clarinet from Mr. Fox.

All the best,
Roger Garrett
