It had nothing to do with a virus per se, but how viruses hijack email.

Remember, all you have to do is send an email to Klarinet & reply to a
followup to subscribe.

If a computer sends an email to Klarinet-subscribe with your email
address forged as the sender, the Klarinet system will send _you_ an
email asking if you want to subscribe. If your computer auto-responded
with a "I'm on vacation", it would send it to the proper return address,
and you'd be subscribed unbeknownst to you. It happens to people very
occasionally.

Re: Linux - I've been running it for quite some time (longer than
probably anyone around, way before it was release 1.0 because release
1.0 wasn't even ever supposed to happen according to Linus). This
mailing list and all the web sites & servers for woodwind.org use LAMP
(Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP) in their underpinnings. But my PCs are
running Windows. I believe in using the best tools for the jobs, and the
tools differ depending on what I intend to do. I use both Thunderbird &
Firefox (email, browser) when possible, but both have some irritating
bugs & problems.

There are plenty of advocacy groups for Linux & Windows and whatever
else - I'd prefer people to use those rather than Klarinet for their
views. I find both sides have rabid adherents, and both are equally
silly at times.

For those that wish to experiment with Linux - read up on what you're
getting into. I've been working with computers for near 30 years now,
and I don't recommend Linux or the variants for novices. Windows is
complicated enough!
