Oops, my mistake! I meant to write "bright" not light. Was tired when I
wrote it.
It will be a really good test - I have a gigantic collection of recordings.

In order to achieve meaningful results, I believe the test must involve
test takers placing the samples in order from "darkest" to "lightest".
Ideally the same work/passage by different players should be used. I
notice you say "light" instead of "bright". Either could be used, but
the words mean different things, and would probably yield different
results. This is not a complaint, but an observation. Which word you
are asking listeners to considered should be clearly identified.

I think that asking for other descriptive words could blur the results.
What is really at issue is whether words can be used describe sounds
in a meaningful way. I think that using two words, generally thought
of as opposites and often used, for good or ill, by clarinetists would
be the most effective beginning toward an answer.
