What a night! I've heard a couple of the older Grisman-Garcia
recordings, but I wasn't prepared for the David Grisman Quintet live
(mandolin, guitar, bass, flute, percussion). It's still "dawg" music,
I suppose, but it's not the same thing at all. It was more like three
hours (plus a bit more) of symphony orchestra playing one concerto after
another.

If ever you have the opportunity to hear them live, I urge you to do so.

One sign of truly great musicians is when they invite a local (also
mandolin) up onto the stage, and they blend around him and make *him*
sound like the group's star without losing their own virtuosic style.

What a night! Their percussionist was ill or couldn't travel or some
such, and theit dummer from 25 years ago filled in. There was an
occasional awkward moment, but that fellow hasn't forgotten how to play.
