Hello, Clarinetists.
Today I finished the Full C Score of the First
Movement of my Clarinet Concerto. I always
write a Piano Reduction and Full C Score at the
same time, when composing a concerto, but at this
moment I am about 100 bars behind on the Piano
Reduction. (Once the whole concerto is done in C
Score, then I make a Duplicate of the Full Score,
and transpose and edit the Transposing
Instruments in that copy.)

dedicated to Professor Joze Kotar.

(The Cadenza is about 1' 35".)

The First Movement was begun on May 17 to
June 2002 and completed from March 23 to
April 20, 2005.
In the last few years since beginning the
Clarinet Concerto, I have invented 7 New
Categories of Fugues (2 were invented in the
years before that) and have completed several
works, including some for clarinet:
"Sonata for Unaccompanied Clarinet"
(May 2002, 3 mvts., 16 min.) dedicated to
Professor Joze Kotar
"Sonata No. 1 for (Bb) Clarinet [or Viola] and
Piano" (June 2003, 4 mvts., 26 min.) dedicated
to Professor Joze Kotar
"Sextet for Clarinet Ensemble"
(Aug. 2003, 3 mvts., 18' 30") dedicated to
Professor Joze Kotar and the Slovenian
Clarinet Sextet
"Quintet and Quintuple Fugue for Bb Clarinet
[or Viola] and Violin, Viola, Cello and Bass"
(Aug. 2004, 5 mvts., 29 min.) dedicated to
Professor Joze Kotar
"Fantasy on a Theme used by Josquin Des Prez
for Viola and Orchestra" (Jan. 2005, Theme &
13 Variations, 23 min.) (which is basically a
Viola Concerto) for Dr. Carolyn Waters Broe
(who has conducted, soloed and recorded other
works of mine).

Here is the scoring of my Clarinet Concerto
2 Flutes, 2 Oboes, 2 Bassoons;
1 Bb Trumpet, 2 Horns in F,
Euphonium and Tuba; (The brass are used
quietly, like the horns in a Mozart work.)
1 Timpanist: 3 Timpani;
1 Percussionist
(so far playing these instruments):
Marc Tree;
Glockenspiel;
Tubular Bells;
Slapstick;
Drum Set:
Medium Suspended Cymbal,
Hi-Hat,
Snare Drum,
Tenor Drum,
Bass Drum;
Harp;
the Solo Bb Clarinet,
and Strings.
I still need to get the Piano Reduction "caught
up" with the Full C Score, but that is merely
mechanical work.
I have already begun work on the Second
Movement, which will be an ABA Form: a slow
Lullaby for Clarinet and Harp alone, then some-
thing that will be lively with the full orchestra
(perhaps a happy or jazzy Fugato), and then back
to the gentle Lullaby for Clarinet and Harp, but
the second time will be with quiet, long chords in
the strings. The Lullaby is in 7/8 meter, with the
Eighth-Note at 72. For now, I don't know if the
lively Middle Section will be in another meter, or
not. The "A" Sections are in Db Lydian, with
enough chromatics that it is making the Pedal
Changes on the Harp somewhat complicated.
(Fortunately I've written a number of harp
works for Dr. Kimberly Houser, who edits them
and teaches me how to write idiomatically for
the harp.)
Just the other day, Sunday, April 17, 2005, I
finally got ideas for the Third Movement for the
first time ever! It will likely be a 5-Part or 7-Part
Rondo, with the First "A" Section being in 6/8.
Perhaps the other sections will be on other
tempi or meters. I just don't know right now.
But I am VERY happy with the singability and
Classical Era (Mozart) Charm of the First Move-
ment, and I hope everyone will love it, after it is
completed and Prof. Joze Kotar has performed it,
so I can then show it to other clarinetists.
I gotta get back to work.
