I suggest that we use a single hammer to drive two different nails. I
propose that people retake Dan's test, this time identifying those
pieces where the clarinet tone is "dark". If there is no agreement,
then we banish the term. Agreement, of course, would not prove that
some clarinets, setups, or players produce dark tone. The perceived
darkness also might stem from the characteristics of the clarinet part,
the setting (that is, the combination of instruments playing), vagaries
of recording technology or other factors. But if there is agreement
that the clarinet sounds dark in some passages, then we should accept
the term and explore further.
