Yes, this is clear to me now. However:

A piece of hardware is designed to accomplish a certain purpose. As
protocols change over the years, I assume that hardware is redesigned to
meet the new goals. Thus it may not be (wasn't, to me) a clear-cut
issue which parts of Sibelius's "MIDI device" are software vs. hardware.

Example: Kontakt Silver's image of a keyboard has a dial which used to
bounce back to "zero" whenever I turned it while sing my old sound card.
Now it stays wherever I put it. I have no way of knowing whether this
is because my old card lacked a certain hardware function that newer
cards have, or perhaps all sound cards have this function and only the
protocols have changed.

Anyway, thanks again for the explanations that you gave along the way.
