Roger Hewitt and I have discovered a specific difference in our sound
cards which Sibelius's manual claims makes a noticeable difference.
(Thank you, Roger!) Perhaps this difference accounts for Roger and
myself receiving tremendously different results despite similar memory
and processor speeds?

It's the sort of thing that you can ask about when buying a sound card
(instead of just asking "Is this card better?")

Sibelius's manual recommends sound cards with "ASIO". Their manual
says that ASIO cards have less "latency" (they respond faster).
Roger's sound card does include an "ASIO interface" wheras my card does
not, and his copy of Sibelius is set to latency = 50 microseconds
whereas my copy sounds like an electric razor unless I set it to 200
microseconds.

I'm going to check ths out more thoroughly. Does anyone here recognize
the term "ASIO" and whether this is as significant as I'm speculating?
