I was one of those who criticized using recordings from different eras
made with different equipment, etc. And Lelia's point about using
multiple 'genres' of music to compare performance styles is very well
taken.

However, it seems clear that Dan has shown that if a "German sound" does
exist, it is not sufficiently unique to override all the other
variables.

We need to face up to the numbers. No individual got more than 12 out
of 20 correct.

This isn't the same as proving that national influence doesn't exist at
all, but it certainly reduces the significance thereof --- which reminds
me a bit of the "does material make a difference?" debate. If such a
difference exists, it can be overpowered by the other experimental
errors.

But it *is* fun to debate and to have firm convictions, isn't it?
