FWIW to Erik or anyone else, I run Sibelius very smoothly on my computer at
work, which is runs at a (relatively) prehistoric CPU clock rate of 600MHz.
It also runs fine on my 1.8GHz machine at home. So I'm not sure what
experience Ormondtoby had to make him feel you need a 2GHz CPU.

Also FWIW, I haven't yet found anything that I've wanted to do in notating
music that I can't do with either program - it's all in finding the menu
item you need. (Well - one thing, actually: you have to use a workaround in
either program to change from Bb to A clarinet or any similar instrument
change in mid-piece.) The menu layouts are, however, very different and I
find that my much longer experience with Finale makes Sibelius more of an
effort. Sibelius tends, though, to act more like a word processor in my
experience and *may* turn out to be easier for a first time user. Your
Encore experience, on the other hand, may predispose you to Finale, since
they were both around and competing with each other long before Sibelius
showed up.

One final suggestion - you can't, unfortunately, base your evaluation on the
freeware versions and even less on the commercial light versions that are
meant for use by young students or people with very simple notation needs.
The freeware trial versions limit your use of crucial features, while the
light versions simply don't have some of them. So you can't decide that
Finale or Sibelius won't do X or makes Y difficult by using Print Music or
Sibelius Student Edition.

My opinion is that the biggest argument for one or the other if you're
starting from scratch is the number of acquaintances or colleagues who can
help you get started on whichever program you choose. At this point there's
not enough important difference between them to matter much otherwise.
