Subj: [kl] Sound card vs.speakers vs. software

The best solution is to have the best of everything, of course --- best
sound card, best speakers, best software, biggest and fastest computer,
best acoustics in my custom-designed music room, and, of course, a
bottle of the best champagne and a plate of the best pickled herring to
go with all the rest of it.

But since almost everyone's funds are limited, a reasonable question is:

Which of the above will provide the most benefit? For example, would a
better sound card or speakers help much if the software doesn't send the
proper commands in the first place?

My gut feeling --- which may be incorrect, which is why I'm asking this
question --- is that if Kontact can produce very close to the sound of
an acoustic violin with my existing hardware, then it should be able to
produce recognizably different sounds for any two instruments which my
ear can hear as being 'different'.... if my software was programmed to
do so?
