Subj: [kl] Test results

The nationality sound test is over and the results, from my point
of view, were disappointing because so many expressed interest in
taking the test, but only eight responded with answers. Perhaps
the pressure of normal daily life prevented the others from
submitting their responses.

The 20 works chosen are shown below as well as the name of the
player or players who executed them. The only two about which I
am not certain in terms of type of instrument are 9 (both Dutch
and I assumed Oehler system, therefore German) and 15, which was
played by a Finnish ensemble and I assumed Oehler system here
too. For the two Israeli players, I accepted French, Boehm, or
American since both play Boehm systems and both studied with
American teachers, though there are excellent German style
teachers in Israel too.

I was amazed that many of the submitters thought that 8 was a
Jewish folk song when, in fact, it is the well-known Khataturian
trio. Many presumed that the Klezmer music, 16, was done by an
American. It wasn't. It was Dieter Klocker. And of all the
German players to miss, item 3 played by Sabine Meyer had 2 right
and 6 wrong.

Below the test answers are response statistics. For example,
item 1 had 2 correct answers (out of 8 people), and 6 did not get
the nationality correctly.

It is hard for me to judge the accuracy or usefulness of the test
because too few actually responded. But for those who did, I
don't think it demonstated any ability whatsoever to recognize
national characteristics in clarinet playing style.

movement): John Bruce Yeh, Roger Garrett, Aris Chavez, J. Laurie
Bloom bass clarinet.
