Swabs and mouthpiece caps can both do a lot of damage to mouthpieces.

Also if you leave things IN a mthpc you can get mold.

I just heard somewhere that mouthpieces will wear out, and I didn't
think that this was possible. I am currently playing on a very old
Selmer D that my clarinet teacher bought back in the 40's when he was
trying out mouthpieces to replace the Kasper he had stolen. He
finally settled on a Selmer E. He said that he wanted a mouthpiece
that he could easily replace when on the road. By the way, I should
share with you who my teacher is. Bill Smith, aka William O Smith.
Think Brubeck, Concerto for Clarinet and Combo, and mulitphonics. I
consider myself extremely lucky to study with him. Anyways, I asked
him my mouthpiece question, and he said that the hard rubber
mouthpieces do not wear out, although they can warp occasionally? I
have no idea. Also, another mouthpiece question. What are people's
opinions on wood mouthpieces? Pomarico makes a wooden jazz mouthpiece
for clarinet. I was intrigued, so any information would be great.
