Mouthpieces do wear over time. The facing can be sharpened up a couple of
times, but eventually enough material is removed that the mouthpiece is no
longer viable. Even without use, mouthpiece measurements can "drift." (Here I
quote research notes of Arthur Benade.)
Remember, it's just rubber...it's not going to last forever.
