Nah. The way you present it -- namely, *as a controversy* -- renders it very
uninteresting, in my opinion.

First, if you can do it, it doesn't matter how you do it.

If you can't do it, it usually means one of three things:

(1) that you don't know what good legato sounds like, or

(2) that you're not aware of how what you're actually producing differs from
good legato, or

(3) you can't imagine how changing what you do might get your sound closer to
what is needed.

Following either 'system' would be an intelligent start on (3), but ultimately
it's resolving problems (1) and (2) that is important.

And anyway, what is musically necessary demands legato of varying degrees,
depending on context, acoustic and so on. You don't want to be stuck with a
'right' way of doing it.

I sometimes wonder what some of these great teachers really did in their spare
time. (Good musicians will know what I'm talking about.)
