Correct assumption, of course.

I guess the local (clarinet) well ran dry. (There were no anonymous
cl. players either - I looked.)

What's a conductor to do in such a case?

I'm assuming you mean Beethoven's 9th. There definitely are 2 clarinet
parts
in Beethoven's score. Maybe this was a Stravinsky arrangement. ;-)
