Yes---I didn't mean to suggest that Yiddish itself wasn't a
language/culture with a long and rich tradition! It's just my
impression that the casual use of "Yid" in *English* is perhaps more
associated with racist usage than in other languages, and this might be
a reason for the alternative translation.
