I, too, grew up in a home where Yiddish was sometimes spoken. I don't
believe Yiddish is an ethnic slur; it's the name of a language and a
culture centered in Eastern Europe, transplanted to the United States,
among other countries, in the late 19th-early 20th centuries. "Yid"
just means "Jew," in Yiddish. If non-Yids put a negative spin on it,
that's their problem!
