Dan recalls correctly that he attended a performance of a Stanford Chamber
Music group coached by me in 1976, in which Emily Bernstein, then a college
freshman,
played the Beethoven octet, and possibly also Poulenc and Mozart. Emily was
a remarkable player, even at the age of 17. Although I very much wish that I
could bring additional lustre to my studio by claiming Emily as a former
private student, she in fact studied with the same amazing teacher that I
did: Rosario Mazzeo.

I, too, found her tragic death of cancer at the relatively young age of 46
devastating news. All Emily's friends and colleagues here in Los Angeles
miss her impeccable
playing in the orchestra of Los Angeles Opera, the Pasadena Symphony, and
elsewhere, and extend their sympathy to her life partner, harpist Jo Ann
Turovsky.

Margaret Thornhill (who uses her own name.)
