Interesting thread, this. When my dad paid $95 for a used Penzel Mueller
clarinet for me around 1950 it came with a short barrel which I had always
to pull out maybe between an eighth to a quarter of an inch to put most of
the notes in tune (with a little lipping to boot). My teacher finally
talked me into buying a longer barrel for it and that did the trick until I
got my Buffet maybe 15 years ago. The P-M still plays beautifully for
me. The Buffet developed a crack in the upper joint about 5 years ago and
I had it repaired. Most unfortunately the crack went right through the
"trill" key hole on the right, second from the top. The gluing and pinning
seem to have fixed it, but my P-M has no such defect. I'll get it out and
play Beethoven's Opus 20 with selected members of my Sili(con) symphony
tonight. It needs to be pulled out of the case and played from time to
time or the German silver develops green spots.
