I had a call from someone who was wanting to get an appraisal for
insurance purposes for a Penzel-Mueller Bb clarinet, made in 1916. She
said that it has a "tunable barrel" and that she had it recently
"restored." It is supposed to have been used in the Detroit Symphony
orchestra in the 1920's and 30's. Does anyone have any idea whether
this might have any value to anyone other than collectors? She's going
to be terribly offended if I have to tell her that it might be most
useful as a lamp - so I won't do that, but I feel pretty certain that no
performers are looking for such an instrument.
