I think some people are just a bit over-sensitive, especially with the
amount of true 'spam' coming in (the mail servers at
sneezy^H^H^H^H^H^Hwoodwind.org, a very small mail server in the grand
scheme of things, rejects over 60,000 spam messages a day. That doesn't
include the 1000's that get through to customers.

This list allows true advertising in any case, using social engineering to
limit the size/frequency of such ads. Since it's a double opt-in list the
chances of unwanted spam getting in is pretty low (and easy to turn off).
