Dan, I want to say something in rebuttal about my analogy to "love".
I intended my analogy to communicate a different train of thought to you
and to Klarinet's other readers, rather than to fit into the structures
that you personally find most acceptable.
"Love" has many different meanings, ranging from physical lust to
religious worship. Love can range from sane to psychotic. It can be
mutual or one-way. And so forth. Yet most meanings for "love" share
an underlying concept of "intense desire" or "wish to be attached to".
If you asked 100 people whether a certain event was an example of
"love", I expect you would receive a mix of "yes" and "no" answers
depending upon each respondent's personal history, station in life,
philosophy, religion, and so forth. You could accentuate the disparity
of answers by manipulating the context --- such as asking about a mercy
killing or an action under the influence of an anti-depressant, or
similar.
Would this inability of various persons to agree (during a 'scientific'
survey) mean that the word does not communicate anything and has no
usefulness? Or would it mean only that the word "love" by itself is
insufficient to describe a particular situation completely?
In the same way, "dark" can have ambiguities and yet it can have
underlying meaning which, admittedly, requires more information in order
to become a completely unambiguous definition.
I defend my analogy as being meaningful. It was my attempt to
communicate a different train of thought than you normally espouse to
you and to everyone else here.
