I was recounting the tale of the cracked Edgware to my teacher who is a
former colleague of Jack Brymer, and he exclaimed 'oh, but the Edgware
could be a marvellous instrument'. He then went on to describe a tour
Brymer made through the B&H factory, trying out various instruments until
one particularly clarinet took his fancy. The staff sheepishly pointed out
that he'd picked up an Edgware, at which point he proclaimed that he would
perform with it that very night, and did so, under Beecham.

With regards to the quality of B&H wood, he (my teacher) thought there
might be some truth in the idea that it could be very variable in quality,
because B&H used to use most of the wood. By contrast someone like Herbert
Wurlitzer would only use the most perfect 50% and throw the rest away.
