baton does help to establish correct beat / rythm
but actually Conductor's tool is not just baton, but the WHOLE body
some conductor prefer not to use baton, in order to help them for better
expression and interpretation
in my opinion, this can only be done in an orchestra that is so very united,
in which the players can 'communicate' well with the conductor... then the
music can be played even without a baton.
If not, it could be a problem for the players.

Of course, sometimes conducting without a baton is essential, for
example where a soloist is directing an ensemble...
