Beyond the necessity for a beat, important for me is cueing.
When that is done with a finger, it is reasonably clear who is
being pointed at, but more often the batonless conductor sort of
waves his/her hand in the general direction. A baton is fairly
precise. As an ancillary benefit, it can also be used to kill
the conductor, it being pointed, sharp, and all.

The problem with not using a baton is it is more difficult to see
what the
conductor is doing from far away. Especially, for those of us
over
45. This is more of a problem in an orchestra where the
clarinets are
usually farther from the conductor than a concert band.

All I really want from a conductor is the beat, anyway. Most
everything
else is in the music. ;-)
