The problem with not using a baton is it is more difficult to see what the
conductor is doing from far away. Especially, for those of us over
45. This is more of a problem in an orchestra where the clarinets are
usually farther from the conductor than a concert band.

All I really want from a conductor is the beat, anyway. Most everything
else is in the music. ;-)
