Subject: [kl] THE TEST

Dan, can you include me too in the test? I wonder how many I will
have
wrong -- I always thought Gervais de Peyer to be a Frenchman,
until recently
I learned he is English!

But then again: in the Dutch radio I often listen to a program in
which
recordings of a piece are criticized by a panel, usually without
them
knowing which soloist or orchestra they are hearing. I often
wonder how well
they can pin down orchestras to a certain country, based on the
"sharpness"
(sorry, Dan) of the sound of the winds (USA orchestras), or
whatever they
mention to give a base to why they think the orchestra is
"Austrian, but not
the Vienna Symphony" or whatever it be. Usually they are right.

But the people in the panel are professionals, they are singers
or
conductors or ... by profession. Maybe the test would say more
if
professional musicians would take it, but then again, you would
have to
fullfill a number of extra preconditions like making sure the
panel will not
recognize the clarinettist playing, and so on. I am sure most
amateurs have
a hearing that is not good or not well-trained enough to make
such fine
distinctions!

Nonetheless: let's make the trial.

Ciao
