[Chuckle!] But seriously, it's more than just the speakers on your
computer. This test will be comparing recording studios, microphones,
and mixers from different manufacturers and generations, and so forth.

Hence this experiment will be testing a huge assortment of variables and
then declaring that the test proves (or disproves) something about a
particular performance which some people have named "the German sound".

Now, I would like to ask a related question, and I hope that someone
with commercial recording experience will reply. Ben Maas is an
obvious candidate, but I assume that there are other people here with
such experience.

When an engineer is selecting the mics that he/she will use, and when
the engineer is adjusting the dials on his mixing equipment, is it
common or unusual to be asked to "make my sound more <whatever>" besides
just louder or quieter?

In my layperson's language, an example might be if a particular musician
asked for more treble in his/her mic. I don't want to use sinful words
(such as "dark" or "bright"), but doesn't the engineer have the ability
to filter out (or amplify) certain parts of the sounds that each mic
picks up?
