Dan,

I would love to participate in this test, but alas, I will be in Germany, at
the Wurlitzer factory picking up my Reform-Boehm "German Sound" clarinet.

Following up on what Neil said about the Germans now using a softer reed, I
can concur that those with whom I have discussed the mouthpiece options
offered by Wurlitzer have all told me to test play an M4 with a 2.5 to 3
strength German cut reed. I believe the tip opening of the M4 is about .95
with a 24mm length. I will probably try other mouthpieces that they make
just to see what the differences are if I have enough time.

Wurlitzer also offers barrels with a socket sized to match a French
mouthpiece, something they don't advertise. I will be picking up a couple of
these as well just to see what happens when you use a French mouthpiece on a
German bore. Something that Bernd Wurlitzer said can be done, although I am
not sure how successfully.

I also have an appointment with Carsten and Hans Zinner to follow up on what
they can offer me that will work well with the German bore in the way of
German and French mouthpieces. I asked Carsten specifically what he thought
about using a French mouthpiece on the Wurlitzer Reform-Boehm clarinet and
he told me that they would have to make something up and have me test it. I
am quite curious how that will go and will let everyone know when I get
back. I have talked with a couple of people about this possibility, but both
of them told me they had doubts that this approach would work well.

Finally, I will be stopping by AW Reeds in Nuremberg to find which model of
their reed will work best on both the German and French mouthpieces and what
strength. The only thing I need to do now is learn how to tie the string off
on a German mouthpiece, but I believe that there is an excellent explanation
available at the Woodwind.org website for this.

Good luck to all of those participating in the test. Wish I could, but I
will be back in time to see the results.

Tom Henson
