Acid-tongued drama critic Alexander Woolcott once wrote in a review that
a particular actor, say John Smith, was "the worst actor in American
theater today." The actor sued, in a case that because a watershed in
First Amendment rights for critics. The case was eventually dismissed.

The next time Woolcott was to review a play including Mr. Smith, the
world anxiously awaited his reaction. He went through the entire review
without mentioning Smith once, and in the closing sentence wrote "Mr.
Smith was not up to his usual standards."
