I'm prompted to write by "The Test" discussion. Many, many years ago I
foolishly made the claim that I could identify the nationality of the
composer of a piece of music even if I'd never heard it before. This
goaded a friend into testing me from his extensive record collection,
and needless to say, I failed miserably. Unfortunately, being young
and stupid, my reaction to this humiliation was immature, to say the
least.
I was reminded of this just now, when I turned on the radio to hear a
rather jolly, quirky piece of music I didn't recognise. "Hmmm, sounds
French" I thought. "Poulenc? Milhaud?". It turned out to be
Souvenirs, Op 28, by Samuel Barber!
