Subj: [kl] The Test
Date: Tue, 8 Mar 2005 13:23:55 -0500

During our discussion of German sounds, at least two people said
that they would be willing to take a test of my devising and in
which they would identify the players by the use of geogrpahic
terms such as German sound, French sound, etc.

I am almost done making up the test and those who are prepared to
take it have to have some technical issues fixed first.

What they will recieve is an mp3 file for EACH of the 20 items in
the test. Each file consists of an entire movement that may take
as long as 10 minutes, though they are not required to hear the
entire movement. Once their mind is made up on the geography of
the player, they can stop that mp3 file from playing.

I will send only one mp3 file at a time because more than one of
those can clog a system. It will be sent to all players taking
the test simultaneously.

In order to play them, you must have Real Player.

Once you have recieved, played, and identified all 20 players
(and it is possible that one or more players may appear twice),
post your results on the clarinet list. When all the test takers
have taken the test, I will put a post up that identifies the
piece and the player.

Test takers do not need to identify the player, but if they do,
it is an automatic correct answer for that excerpt. What I
expect is something like this:

Test item 1, French player
Test item 2, German player
Test item 3, American player
Test item 4, English player

French will cover all of France and Belgium
German will cover all of Germany, the Netherlands, and Austria
American will cover all of the U.S. and Canada

Now is the time to tell me what, if anything, needs to be changed
in this test.

Three weeks be allowed for the test and those taking it are asked
not to consult with anyone. Keep in mind that this is to
determine if an individual can identify the geography of the
player; i.e., the German sound.

Test takers will have one week to subscribe to the test. I have
a lot of paperwork to keep up. If someone would like to suggest
a neutral person to have the list of answers BEFORE we begin so
as to assure that the test is on the up and up, by all means
volunteer someone with their permission, of course, That person
will say NOTHING and contribute NOTHING to the discussion until
the test is over.

The test will be built by 3/12 with subscriptions to be taken at
that time. The test will begin on 3/19.

Any questions?
