Hi Listers,

This seems to fit to the present discussion about German vs. French sound. I
just got back from a wonderful concert with the Trio di Clarone (GERMANS
playing GERMAN clarinets) in Loerrach with a program of FRENCH music. And
that dangerously close to the French border! ;-)

For those who don't know, the Trio di Clarone consists of Sabine Meyer,
Wolfgang Meyer and Reiner Wehle. Also playing was the pianist Kalle Randalu
who didn't really manage to catch my attention until the second half.

But point was: here were three German clarinettists who have known each
other for years, are even related and play fantastically well together.
Their tones and their personalities could hardly be more different! Even
though they all play very similar setups. Reiner and Wolfgang both made
liberal use of vibrato. They seemed to consider it "French".

One piece was the Saint-Saens Sonata for clarinet and piano played by
Reiner. I had the feeling that he was trying to get something more "French"
out of his German clarinet. When Wolfgang played the Premier Rhapsody by
Debussy, I had the feeling that he had a very "German" approach to this
fantasy-like French piece. When Sabine played, it didn't matter one twit
what instrument or what style. It was just fantastic.

Many thanks to Trio di Clarone!

Ciao,
David
