Even without amplification, there are rare occasions when the
ears can be damaged. A local concert that I did not play,
fortunately, included the 1812 Overture with real cannons.
Everyone in the group had ear plugs and after the over was
finished the players removed them. Then some idiot in the cannot
group decided to fire a final shot.

It was severe that several players had their careers terminated.
They sued and lost.
