I hesitate to suggest that the standard invitation to play a
cadenza in music of the 18th and early 19th century, necessarily
applies to music of considerably later periods. By the time of
Tchaikovsky, the lead in was not at all a common practice, and
the cadenza had taken on a completely different purpose.
Bottom line, it's not necessarily correct to apply 18th century
standards to late 19th century music, and vice versa.

Subject: [kl] Cadenza in Tchaikovsky violin concerto ??
Can anyone tell me whether this concerto includes a cadenza in
Dan's
strict sense of the word's meaning? (I'm asking because of a
'feel
good' newspaper review that offended me deeply.)
Thank you
