Your points are quite unrelated to this (for the record, I'm fairly sure
I agree with you about it being a waste of time).
How is the information of use to you? I don't know, but there are
multitudes of things in academia which have no use - or the use is found
years after their research, in a totally different context. Pragmatism
is not why we research things!
