One of the beneficial reasons behind bringing up this (and other)
issues periodically is due to the fact that the body politic of
KLARINET keeps changing. After about a two year cycle, the new
guys on the block reintroduce terms that the older guys have been
through and had a chance to think about. Then things calm down
for another year or two.

This discussion on German sound was the most intelligent that we
have ever had on it. It was thoughtful, insightful, and
interesting. And most important, it caused a number of the
players on this list to rethink an old issue. Maybe they came
out of the same hole as they went in, but they thought about an
old problem in a new light. And that never hurts.

In about two years, some nice newcomer is going to talk about the
German sound, with his ideas formed by some traditional wisdom of
10, 20, or even 30 years ago. And I'm going to jump on him.

What I don't want in the clarinet world that has been so
important to me for my entire life, is a group of people with
barnacles on them, their minds fixed, opposed to both new ideas
or any reexamination of old ones, particularly shibboleths that
are assumed to be correct because that is what we learned from
our teachers.

I regret to say that a few players I have known over the last 50
years and more were very much opposed to new ideas and completely
refuesed to reexamine old ones they held. And a few of these
have had a considerable effect on the players of today.

We're learning. We're learning.
