Don't forget the effects of recording equipment!

If you decide that a certain recording was performed by a German
clarinetist, and it turns out not to be so, how certain will you be that
you weren't deceived by the recording engineer, or by his equipment,
or.....

As a simple example, David, you've purchased mics during your career and
you've made your own CDs, and then you've gone out and bought a
different mic in order to get a different result. So you know what I'm
talking about.

A more 'objective' test would be to invite clarinetists to play in the
same room where you are sitting.
