Joe, you may be interested in actual spectral graphs of clarinet sounds
(assuming the web page is still there, I haven't checked). Oftentimes
the page is offline while his students use his lab equipment:

Mr. Pyne once told me that the university spent $10,000+ (5 years ago)
for the equipment and software to make these graphs; and of course the
university already had a respectable amount of equipment and software in
place.
So $100 isn't going to go very far..........
But my purpose in mentioning this link is in order that you can see with
your own eyes how _complex_ an actual curve is, and how much of a
computational task it would be to extract meaningful parameters from
them which correlate with timbres that human beings can reliably
identify by ear.
There was a time when I was going to attempt this project..... until
others showed me what would be involved!
