I recall that in Barenboim's book of conversations with Edward Said,
there is an interview in which he relates phrasing patterns in Germanic
playing styles to the language, but of course this is a different thing
to instrumental character.

It does strike me, though, that subtly different phrasing could easily
give the impression of different character regardless of the actual
sound being made.
